The Claddagh's design includes two hands clasping a heart with a crown on top which symbolise love (the heart), friendship (the hands), and loyalty (the crown). The thought behind the symbol is "With my hands I give you my heart, and crown it with my love."

The way in which the ring is worn is said to be symbolic as well. If the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart pointing outward and away from the body, this indicates the person is available for dating. If the ring is worn on the right hand with the heart pointing towards the body, this indicates the person is in a relationship, that someone has "captured their heart". When worn on the left ring finger with the heart pointing outward it indicates engagement and when pointing inward it indicates marriage.
